“13 Amps of Terror: The Hidden Fire Hazard That Could be Lurking in Your Holiday Accomodation’s Plugs!”

As a City & Guilds qualified PAT tester who specialises in working within the holiday rental market PAT Testing holiday lets in West Cornwall, I have my own holiday let in Sennen that I manage myself so I know this business and its needs well, I’ve seen my fair share of electrical oddities. But there’s one recurring issue that truly makes my heart sink when I PAT Test: incorrect fuse sizes, particularly the dreaded 13 amp fuse where a 3 amp should be.
You might think, “What’s the big deal? It’s just a fuse.” But trust me, it’s a massive deal, especially in a holiday let where the safety of your guests is paramount and it really is one of the most common faults I discover and correct during my PAT Testing of self catering accomodation in Cornwall.
The Problem: Over-Fusing and Overloading
Let’s break it down. A fuse is a safety device designed to protect an appliance and the wiring from excessive current. It’s the electrical equivalent of a safety valve. When the current exceeds the fuse’s rating, the fuse wire melts, breaking the circuit and preventing damage or fire.
So in this instance, a bedside lamp, it requires a 3 amp fuse because it draws a relatively small amount of current and as can be seen from the photo the fuse required for the appliance is very clearly marked on the plug top. However, despite this, in every single lamp in the cottage I found 13 amp fuses installed in the plugs. Sadly this happens all too often.
Why is this dangerous?
- No Overload Protection: A 13 amp fuse allows significantly more current to flow than a 3 amp fuse. If a fault occurs in the lamp, the 13 amp fuse might not blow until the wiring is severely overloaded, potentially leading to overheating and a fire.
- Thin Wiring Dangers: Many smaller appliances, like lamps, have thin internal wiring designed to handle lower currents. A 13 amp fuse won’t protect this thin wiring, and it can easily overheat and melt, again, posing a fire risk.
- False Sense of Security: Many people assume that a 13 amp fuse is “better” or “stronger,” but it’s completely inappropriate for many common household appliances. This misconception can lead to a dangerous complacency.
- Guest Safety: In a holiday let, you have a rotating cast of guests. They may not be familiar with the appliances or electrical safety in general. If a fault occurs, they may not react quickly enough, putting themselves and your property at risk.
The Reality: It’s More Common Than You Think
I’ve discovered these incorrect fuses in all sorts of appliances in holiday lets in Cornwall: lamps, radios, hair driers and even some kitchen gadgets. It’s often a result of previous owners, cleaners or even guests replacing fuses without knowing the correct rating.
To make the issue worse, too many PAT Testers, as I have found, do not even bother to open plugs and check despite it being a stated requirement of the IET Code of Practice 5th Edition for the In Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.
Prevention is Key
As a holiday let owner, you have a duty of care to your guests and you have legal responsibilities to maintain your electrical appliances. Here’s what you can do:
- Regular PAT Testing: Schedule regular PAT testing with a qualified professional. They will check the fuses and ensure all appliances are safe, and if they do not open plugs then sorry but they are not doing their job correctly and are putting your reputation, your guests safety and your property at risk.
- Educate Guests: Provide clear instructions on electrical safety in your welcome pack and who they need to contact if an appliance does not work.
- Check Fuses Yourself: If you’re comfortable and competent doing so, periodically check the fuses in your appliances. Ensure they match the rating specified on the appliance’s rating plate or in the instruction manual.
- Replace Incorrect Fuses: If you find an incorrect fuse, replace it with the correct rating immediately.
