A POST PAT TEST TIP FOR OWNERS

Has your property been correctly PAT Tested? This plug say’s no!

A Quick ‘Post’ PAT Testing Check for Your Peace of Mind

Last week, PAT Testing a holiday let here in West Conrwall, I came across this 13a plug with several years of PAT Test ‘Pass’ stickers on it, but yet its original anti-tamper seal was still perfectly intact which means the plug hadn’t been opened for inspection during any of those previous PAT Tests. Sadly it is something I frequently see in previously PAT Tested holiday accomodation properties, hotels, B&Bs and businesses that I am now asked to PAT Test in the Penzance region.

Why is opening the plug so important?

Because the most common electrical faults on portable appliances are often hidden inside the plug. In fact, in my work, I would say that around 90% of the faults I find are during this internal visual check. These are serious issues you can’t see from the outside, such as:

Incorrect fuse ratings (like a 13A fuse in a 3A lamp), which is a significant fire risk.

Loose or missing terminal screws that can cause overheating and potential earth connection failiure.

Poor cable grip, allowing wires to be pulled loose.

Signs of heat damage or arcing on the internal pins.

DIY ‘repairs’ where fuses have been dangerously bypassed.

And lets not forget that cup of coffee your guest spilled on the plug, didnt tell you, and now as a result has rusted the plug internals.

This post isn’t about pointing fingers, my aim is simply to empower you with knowledge so that after your next PAT Test you can take a glance at your rewirable plugs and if you find that the small plastic or foil anti-tamper seal over the screw is still unbroken is shows that this essential internal inspection was likely overlooked.

A proper PAT test should give you genuine confidence in your electrical safety, not just a sticker. If you’re ever unsure about what a thorough test includes, please feel free to reach out to me because here at PAT Testing Penzance I’m always happy to help clarify exactly what a PAT test should involve and why it is neccessary.
